Cashmere is rated as the best quality natural fibre. It is the softest and lightest of all available fibres. Popular accessories made out of cashmere fibre are coats and suit fabrics, dress and knitwear. It is also used to make blankets, ropes, curtains and grain bags. Needless to say, cashmere is the most expensive of all fibres.  So it is important to know how to take care of your cashmere accessories.

Cleaning Cashmere Accessories:

The gentlest method of cleaning cashmere is by hand-washing. To keep them good looking all cashmere garments need to be washed after frequent wearing. As the fibre tends to become softer with each wash, regular wash will make it more comfortable to wear.

Use warm water and a mild soap to wash the garment. If you want, you can also use a shampoo. Take care not to twist or wring the cashmere. Wearing or twisting will stretch it out of shape. All you need to do is compress the excess water from the garment.

To bring this about lay your cashmere knitwear on a dry towel. Ease it back to shape and roll it up in the towel. Press it over a second towel to remove excess water. Another way is to lay the garment on a fresh dry towel and dry it. After it dries fold it carefully, without a crease in the centre, and lay it flat on a shelf. If you wish you can fold it with a tissue and keep it flat in a drawer.

If your garment catches a stain, a gentle wash is enough to remove it. If it is a serious stain then do take any chances. Hand it over to a good dry cleaner.

Storing Cashmere Knitwear:

When you do not use your knitwear, particularly during off seasons, you need to protect them from silver fish, moths, carpet beetles etc. A good way out is to keep it in a sealable plastic bag.

Storing it in acid free containers or tissues can prevent it from aging and yellowing. These items are available online.

Your cashmere garment is a very precious item. Only proper care can make it last longer.
