What to look for in a Slate Pool Table
Buying a slate pool table is quite a big investment. A professional slate pool table is not going to be cheap, which is why you should know what to look for so that you can get the best table for your budget.

When you talk about a slate pool table, you are talking about the actual surface of the table. The slate part is the part of the table that the game is actually played. It is important that the slate is even and smooth. If you get a playing surface that is not smooth or has a slight ditch or tilt to it, the outcome of the game will be affected. To keep the pool game fair, look for a slate pool table that has a smooth and perfectly balanced surface.

A three piece slate is the most common type of pool table there is. The slate that comes on a pool table can range from 1 piece to 3 pieces. Having three pieces of slate that are combined together, can allow the smoothest and most level playing surface for the pool table. Also, slate comes in different thicknesses. For a slate pool table, the thickness of the slate can range from 3/4”, 7/8”, and 1”.  A 3/4” thickness is the least expensive of the group. A 1” thickness is the standard for most pool tables and is what most people look for when they shop for a slate pool table. The 1” thickness is ideal for the weight and durability of the product. Also, it makes it much harder to move the pool table, which is good for the game as you won't be moving the table as you are trying to sink a shot.

A slate pool table can have quite a few variations for the frame. Some pool tables are made from solid wood all the way down and others have cabinets that are made from MDF. Each one of these types is well-suited for a slate pool table. This comes to an individual's own taste and style and what they are looking for in their pool table. Some people like the all wood with no cabinet underneath and just the legs. Others like to have the cabinet with a ball return system.

When looking for a pool table, you definitely want to consider a slate pool table for your purchase. Look for a slate pool table that has the smooth and level finish along with the 1” thickness to get the best games out your pool table.
