Recruitment is a costly and time consuming business. It might not appear
so from the candidate's perspective, but think about it from the
employer's point of view. They can use an agency, who do the leg work
but charge typically around twenty percent of year one salary. Not
cheap. Or they can place an advert in a newspaper or trade magazine.
Which isn't cheap either. Then they have to sift through the cvs and
finally conduct interviews. Even then a candidate may not work out and
the whole process will have to be repeated. Which uses up huge amounts
of the most precious resource any company has. Time.
A simple paper cv is very limited. It can only tell an employer so much about you. Which is why the online cv is starting to become more and more popular. Because basically it's a great way to prevent wasted interviews with candidated who might look good on paper, but who turn out not be suited to the role or nothing like their profile. Anyone can hide behind words on a cv!
An online resume is much better for both parties. The candidate can better showcase their skills and experience. The prospective employer can make a better judgement
on whether to interview
or not. With an online cv, candidates can upload video, slides, word
documents which help flesh out and evidence who they actually are and
what they have achieved. You can upload your academic and vocational
qualifications for example. Showcase presentations or provide examples
of articles and white papers you have written.
Online resumes will soon become standard. Technology has revolutionised so many aspects of business and HR and recruitment are no different. Times and changing and you can't stand still. So if you're struggling to get noticed as a candidate or if you can't find the right people for the job if you're recruiting, maybe it's time to ditch the paper and go online.
