Introduction to Ice Diving
Ice diving is very popular amongst adventure seekers and advanced divers. Anyone can learn the skills needed for ice diving although because of the single exit point (and entry) it should really not be undertaken until a diver is relatively experienced in the open water.

When learning the ropes and being trained, a diver will lean how to recognize if a dive site is safe, how ice forms, how to prepare the dive site and the equipment as well as many specialist safety drills. For added safety, a safety line is worn by ice divers which attaches to the scuba suit. This makes ice diving a team activity or sport, as there is to be constant communication between the line tender (person out of the water on the other end of the line) and the diver. Different pulls on the line represent certain signals so the two members of the team can be in constant contact. Furthermore, there is a “spare” diver at all times also with an individual tender who is ready to dive in to the water at a moment’s notice in order to assist in the event of a problem.

The White Sea on the coast of Russia is the perfect destination for ice diving. It is the only European sea that is covered in ice during the winter months. It offers an incredible diving experience, certainly one that will never be forgotten. The sea is part of the basin of the Arctic Ocean and boasts stunning ice-hummocks and cavities to explore as well as bountiful flaura and fauna. Divers can expect to see starfish, sea urchins, crabs, shrimps, sea anemones and plenty of soft corral that sits under the thick layer of ice. Beluga whales are also a common sight. Ice Diving is an incredibly exhilarating and fulfilling experience as anyone who has ever tried it will testify!
