• Portable DVD players are just that - portable and lightweight, fitting easily into your carry-on luggage.
• The battery life of a DVD player for outweighs the battery life of a laptop
• A portable DVD player is unlikely to require in depth security checks like laptops and other portable media players.

Basically, if you are used to lugging around a laptop and enjoy its various options for entertainment, a portable DVD would probably be inappropriate. But if you simply want to watch a movie of your choice during the flight, a portable DVD player will do just fine.
