Tanzania. It’s a
surprising country that holds much promise of discovery. It has many ups and
many downs. Zanzibar
is the most famous of all these cities and it is to Zanzibar that tourists flock. Zanzibar travel package information
focus on the glitz, glamour of a holiday on the beach. And yet, there is so
more to Tanzania
than just this one city.

Dar es Salaam
This is
probably the most well known Tanzanian city. Dar es Salaam
is the commercial capital of Tanzania
and is host to Tanzania’s
oldest university – the University of Dar
es Salaam.
'Safari'
is a Swahili word. And Swahili is one of the languages that Tanzanians speak.
So it follows that our love for 'safaris' is one of the reasons why we
Westerners flock to Tanzania.
But there are other reasons, too: the markets, for one. And one of the other
reasons is more sombre: to take photos of the courthouse where the
ground-breaking International Criminal Tribunal
for Rwanda
beganin 1995.
This city
is Tanzania’s national
capital; Dar es Salaam
is the commercial capital. Dodoma has two
universities: St Johns University of Tanzania and the University of Dodoma.
Go to one of the cattle markets on a Sunday before you tackle Lion Rock, which
overlooks Dodoma.
The Mbeya
meteor, which is the 8th largest in the world, crashed at this site and weighs
about 12 ton. Other attractions in Mbeya are the
Ngozi Crater Lake, the mountain peaks that
overlook the East African Rift Valley, and the NaturalBridge at Kiwira.
The UluguruMountains in Morogoro get their name
from the Luguru tribe, who are a tribe in that area. Go
watch animals at MikumiNational Park and don’t forget to pay tribute to the
historic MorogoroConference of 1969, which led the way
to South Africa’s
resistance movement.
The
Bismarck Rock is a rock formation and is one of the things you should go see
when you’re in Mwanza. Mwanza isn’t really on the tourist route; it’s one of
those towns that fit the category of 'off the beaten track'.
Zanzibar
Zanzibar is
more than just an archipelago off the Tanzanian coast. Zanzibar evokes images of spices, beaches,
and pulsating rhythms. This city is where much of Tanzania’s tourism dollars
originate. It is also the host of the Zanzibar
international film festival, which showcases films by artists from all over Africa.
